Literature festivals are a fantastic way to bring the joys of reading to life. Not only are they a dream come true for bookworms, but they’re also a great opportunity to introduce more reluctant readers to the joys of reading!

Below are some of the most interesting literature festivals, fairs and events taking place throughout the UK across 2019-2020.

Bath Children’s Literature Festival (27th September – 6th October)

The Children’s Literature Festival is a must for all book fans.

Speakers include Cressida Cowell and Michael Rosen, and there are lots of workshops taking place, including the opportunity to create your own Shaun the Sheep model .

Cheltenham Literature Festival (4th – 13th October)

This year marks the 70th anniversary of the world’s oldest literature festival, and there’s a whole programme of family events to celebrate the occasion!

Malorie Blackman, Chris Riddell and Robin Stevens are among the famous authors speaking at the event.

Imagine Children’s Festival (February 2020, dates TBC)

Is your child a budding young author? Visit Southbank in London for this free festival celebrating children’s literature, theatre and music.

Lots of workshops will be taking place, including how to write your very own stories, and children’s authors will be discussing their new books.

Oxford Literary Festival (30th March – 7th April)

For an array of interesting and insightful talks, the Oxford Literary Festival is the place to be. 

Highlights include a talk celebrating the Harry Potter books and a look into what makes a great children’s book.

Cardiff Children’s Literature Festival (April 2020, dates TBC)

For a world of literary fun, Cardiff’s very own Literature Festival is a fantastic day out.

Last year’s highlights included talks by Gavin Puckett and Catherine Wilkins.

Hay Festival (21st – 31st May 2020)

An entire festival dedicated to literature sounds like a dream come true!

The famous festival has an entire programme dedicated to children’s books, including storytelling and illustration workshops.

Edinburgh International Book Festival (August 2020, dates TBC)

For an unforgettable day out, the Edinburgh International Book Festival has something for everyone.

From authors to illustrators, there are plenty of talks taking place, as well as food tents and play areas for younger children to enjoy.
