Is DoodleEnglish GDPR compliant?
No voice on DoodleEnglish
If you can hear sound in DoodleEnglish, but not the voice reading out the questions – It may be that you have not selected a voice compatible with DoodleEnglish, to do this:
On an iPad or iPhone, go into Settings > General > Accessibility > Speech > Voices. Choose your language and download from the selection of voices. We think that ‘Serena’ or ‘Oliver’ work most effectively. On Android devices, go to System Settings > Language & Input > Text-to-speech output. Hit the gear icon next to the “Google text to speech” option and click on “Language” in the settings screen.
Switching between DoodleEnglish and DoodleMaths – Parent Dashboard
You can now switch between subjects on the parent dashboard This is done by hovering over the DoodleMaths logo on the top left of the page.
On DoodleMaths you will be able to view your child’s data for both DoodleMaths and DoodleTables.
On DoodleEnglish you will be able to view your child’s data for both DoodleEnglish and DoodleASpell.
No sound on DoodleEnglish/DoodleMaths
If the sound isn’t working on DoodleMaths or DoodleEnglish, it is probably a device issue. On iPads in particular, there are numerous ways you can mute your device. There are a number of good device-specific blogs that help to troubleshoot this – as a starting point, try:
Do I need separate logins for DoodleMaths and DoodleEnglish?
No, definitely not. Your child’s login details should work with any Doodle app.
I’ve upgraded to Premium through the website, so why is the app still showing Basic?
The change from Basic to Premium may not show up immediately, especially if your tablet or phone is off-line. If you log out, then log back in again, this will solve the problem.
Is my data safe? Who has access to it?
Data on our system is held in accordance with ICO guidelines, and all staff in our office with access to anything sensitive hold enhanced DBS checks.
When you link your child to a school in our system, it may make some of your child’s progress visible to a teacher at that school who has also signed up to DoodleEnglish. We carefully verify all teachers who sign up to DoodleEnglish by ensuring they have linked with their academic email address and proven ownership of that address. In addition, we telephone the school to ensure that the supplied email address matches the school’s records and that the teacher has indeed signed up. Only then do we mark that teacher as ‘verified’, enabling them to view the progress data of children linked to their school.
More information is available here.
What if I think my child’s DoodleEnglish Age is wrong?
We use DoodleEnglish and DoodleSpell Ages to measure your child’s overall level of understanding. We calculate this by looking at the point your child is in their program in terms of the level of questions they are currently being asked. We then compare this to the average age of other children in our system who are at a similar point in their program.
When a child first starts using the app, all the questions they receive are designed to calibrate the work program to their level. As they continue using the app, and they are given a DoodleEnglish Age, the proportion of calibration questions drops significantly. Occasionally, in those early stages, it can be possible that either 1) a child can have a bad day, in which case the DoodleEnglish Age comes out a little too low, or 2) the child can receive excessive help, or put in their initial details incorrectly, in which case the DoodleEnglish Age can come out too high.
In the first instance, where the DoodleEnglish Age is too low, we recommend you leave it (unless the work programme is excessively easy), as the app will calibrate up to the correct level quickly without any loss of confidence to the child.
In the second instance, where the DoodleEnglish Age is too high, we do recommend you log in to the Parent Dashboard, go to Manage > Children and under Actions, select ‘Force Recalibration’ – this will put the app back into calibration mode and reset it to the correct level (if it’s a school account, ask your child’s teacher to do this). If a child receives lots of questions early on which are too hard, they’ll lose confidence.
Don’t be alarmed if your child has a DoodleEnglish Age lower than their actual age – statistically this is the case for half our users. The most important thing is that the questions they are being asked are sufficiently challenging to them as an individual to ensure progress, without being excessively difficult and leaving them demoralised. Children will not improve their own standard of maths until their confidence has been restored – this is key!
If you’d like a discussion with someone from our education team to understand this further, feel free to arrange an appointment by emailing us at email@example.com.
How is a child’s DoodleEnglish Age calculated?
DoodleEnglish Age is a way of measuring your child’s overall level of understanding. If a child has a DoodleEnglish Age of 7.5, they will be working at the level of an average 7-and-a-half year old.
We calculate this by looking at the point your child is in their work program in terms of the questions they are currently being asked. We then compare this to the average age of other children in our system who are at a similar point in their program.
DoodleEnglish will begin by asking your child questions when they first start using the app and do a number of ‘7-a-day’ exercises. We record the areas where they find questions difficult, until they reach a point where we know enough to construct their work program. At this point, their DoodleEnglish Age will be visible on both the Parent Dashboard and Teacher Dashboard.
How do I change the voice in the app?
Some devices are defaulted to rather dreary and perhaps uninspiring voices, but it is possible to change the voice.
How often are DoodleEnglish and DoodleSpell updated?
There are various aspects of the DoodleEnglish system, all of which should work harmoniously together. But as with anything technical, things can go wrong. Our technicians are working all the time, mainly on improvements, but also bug fixes. All our products are tested thoroughly prior to release, and we tend to do an update of our website and apps every 2-3 months containing bug fixes and improvements. With the website and dashboards, minor bugs (by which we mean bugs which give a slightly below-par experience for some users) are fixed more frequently. We have created our content in such a way that any issues with questions and explanations are corrected within 24 hours from being reported – this way we keep content issues to an absolute minimum. Any critical bugs (by which we mean, bugs which affect a user’s work program, or bugs which prevent usage of the app) are always fixed immediately.
How do I link my child’s home account to their school’s new account?
If your child’s school has started to use DoodleEnglish but you already have an account as a home user, it is possible to link your account to your child’s class so that they do not have to start again with a new account. Link their account to their school through the settings page in the app (under ‘Grown Ups’). The teacher will then see their account listed under unverified children. Ask the teacher to verify them, move them to the correct class and then archive their new school account.
How do I cancel my subscription?
All subscriptions (both annual and monthly) are auto-renewing. To cancel your subscription, follow the instructions appropriate to the store you purchased from:
If you started your subscription directly from the Parent Dashboard, then you can cancel your subscription by logging on, then selecting ‘Children’ > ‘Actions’ > ‘Manage Subscription’.
How do I switch from a monthly to an annual or lifetime subscription?
To switch, first cancel your monthly subscription through the app store you bought the app through (Apple, Google Play or Amazon). Once this is cancelled, you will need to wait until your month is finished (usually around 30 days after your last payment). You can then upgrade to an annual or lifetime subscription by heading over to the Parent Dashboard.
If you started your monthly subscription directly from the Parent Dashboard, you can manage what type of subscription you have directly from there.
Alternatively, give us a call on 01225 220122 and we can switch you over immediately.
I’m not sure the app is synchronising between devices or the server
DoodleMaths saves its progress to our server every time the app returns to the home screen, or a child logs out. But it does need a data connection (3G, 4G or wifi) to do this. If it doesn’t have a data connection, then it saves the progress on the device instead.
If your child finishes a session off-line, then they must start the next session on the same device.
Make sure, then, that:
1. Children always log out back to the “Select a User” screen when finishing a session
2. They look out for the “Offline” symbol when they log out – if they see it, they’ll need to remember to resume their next session on the same device.
How does DoodleEnglish work?
DoodleEnglish mimics the actions of a good tutor. Its in-built intelligence identifies the strengths and weaknesses unique to each child and constructs a work program specific to their needs. It creates an immersive, interactive learning experience for young children, who are simply guided through the programme to the areas they need to work on.
Children open the app and within seconds can be working on short, snappy exercises. Children need to do their ‘7/8/9/10 A Day’ five times a week and a ‘New This Week’ at least once a week, before they can access engaging games and their selected avatar.
How much does DoodleEnglish cost?
You can subscribe to Premium at a cost of £5.99/$7.99 per child per month, £55.99/$79.99 per year, or alternatively with a one-off Lifetime payment of £169.99/$244.99.
All subscriptions come with a free 7 day trial, and if DoodleEnglish isn’t for you subscriptions can be cancelled at anytime. Note that Lifetime subscriptions cannot be transferred between apps or other children, and plans auto-renew. For more information, take a look here.
Can I use multiple devices?
Yes, you can download the DoodleEnglish and DoodleSpell apps onto any device you wish to use; log in to each with your family account details. Your child’s subscription will apply across all devices, whether they’re Android, Apple, or Kindle, and their work program will synchronise automatically between devices if they log out to the ‘Select A User’ screen after each session.
If there is no internet connection when starting a session, the app will use your child’s work program from the last session on that device.
Do I need a WiFi connection?
DoodleEnglish can be used with or without a data connection. However, the app only synchronises with the Parent and Teacher dashboards (and other devices) when it has a connection. If there is no connection, the app will store progress locally in the device and synchronise when the connection is regained.
When should I help my child?
DO: Help your child when learning a ‘New This Week’ topic. However, try to encourage them to improve their score if you feel they didn’t quite understand first time round.
DO: encourage and reward – but only when deserved!
DO: promote independent use – this is essential if your child is going to develop skills and confidence that they can take back into the classroom.
DO NOT: help your child with their 7/8/9/10-a-day. Performance on these questions is used to determine future work programs – if they are given excessive help and get questions right that they don’t fully understand, their work program may become too hard for them.
How do I monitor my child?
Once you get your login, you can access the Parent Dashboard. Here you can see exactly what your children have been up to on DoodleEnglish in the past week or in their lifetime use of the program, and even see them answer questions in real time – meaning you can keep an eye on them without staring over their shoulder! While monitoring in real time, if a child has been inactive for over 4 minutes they will turn red, enabling you to help them if necessary. Reports show how much work a child has done in the last week and analytics will highlight their particular strengths and weaknesses.
How can I reward my child?
Children who obtain a fantastic number of stars or a record breaking streak should be rewarded for their hard work. You can download and print off your own DoodleEnglish certificates to present to your children once they complete a DoodleEnglish milestone or just for consistently doing some great work in the app. Check out our Doodle Store for even more rewards and goodies!
